Alkalinity, also referred to as carbonate hardness or buffering capacity, is essentially a means of quantifying the stability of pH in a solution, such as aquarium water. In an aquarium, weak acids formed by oxygen respiration and the decomposition of organic material gradually deplete alkalinity. If left unchecked, the alkalinity drops below a critical level and pH begins to fluctuate more wildly than is normally suggested (a daily pH shift of +/-0.2 is normal in marine aquaria), causing stress to livestock. Alkalinity is also depleted by reef-building organisms during the production of aragonite (~60% carbonates by weight), and is therefore very important for their rapid growth. Maintaining the alkalinity in marine aquaria between 7 - 12 dKH (2.5 - 4.3 meq/L) will generally maintain pH within the desired range.

Photosynthesis is carried out within cell bodies known as Chloroplasts. Iron is utilized in the electron transport chain within the chloroplasts, and is therefore required by photosynthetic organisms for continued functioning and health. In marine aquaria, these organisms include macroalgae (such as Caulerpa, Halimeda, and Penicillus spp.), marsh grasses and mangroves, encrusting calcareous algae, and the symbiotic zooxanthellae and zoochlorellae that reside within the tissues of hermatypic corals, clams, and their allies, as well as in some sponges. In effect, the availability of iron becomes a limiting factor in the rate of photosynthesis, and hence the rate of nutrient uptake and growth, for these organisms.
While each aquarium will require different concentrations of iron, a good place to begin is within a range of 0.05 - 0.10 ppm; this will generally provide sufficient iron for the photosynthetic organisms present in the system. Some aquaria may require, or benefit from, iron concentrations greater than 0.10 ppm, however greatly exceeding this level is not recommended. The best method of determining the optimal iron concentration for an aquarium is to begin at 0.05 ppm and then gradually (i.e. over a period of weeks) increase the concentration as warranted by the appearance of the aquarium. Phosphate is a substance that encourages growth of algae under the environmental conditions commonly found in marine aquaria, and overdosing iron in the presence of excessive phosphate may result in algal proliferation; for this reason, the concentration of phosphate in a marine aquarium should be maintained as close to immeasurable as possible.
The rate at which iron is extracted from the water is determined by the stocking density of photosynthetic organisms, type of lighting, and other conditions. Once the rate of iron uptake in the aquarium has been determined, the proper dosing rate of this product can be easily calculated.

Magnesium plays a vital role in reef aquaria: it helps maintain calcium and carbonate (composing the majority of measurable alkalinity) concentrations by limiting unwanted inorganic precipitation with each other. In the absence of adequate magnesium ions, calcium and carbonate ions bond rapidly, depleting their concentrations in the system and creating the false impression that heavier supplementation is required to re-establish the desired concentrations. No matter how much calcium is added, its natural seawater concentration of 412 ppm will never be sustained until the magnesium concentration begins to approach 1,290 ppm. Once the balance between calcium and magnesium has been established, subsequent calcium supplementation yields immediate positive results. Keeping magnesium within a range of 1,290-1,320 ppm will maintain the desired balance, and provides enough of the element to reef-building organisms for the formation of aragonite (~0.10% Mg by weight).

Marine snow is a term coined by oceanographers to describe aggregate particulate material (which may or may not be organic) falling towards the sea floor; the material, itself, is largely composed of the remnants of deceased zooplankton and large phytoplankton. These organic particles typically become colonized by various microorganisms (primarily bacteria and protozoans) during their descent towards the sea floor; the decomposition of the organic material by the microorganism ‰ÛÏcolony‰ on each particle recycles the nutrients locked up within it. The constant descent of these particles through the water column has the appearance of snow fall, hence the name ‰ÛÏmarine snow‰. While marine snow is primarily associated with productive regions of the open ocean rather than tropical coral reefs, the concept (with some improvements adressing the requirements of reef-building organisms) may be applied to reef aquaria as a means of simultaneously delivering organic and inorganic nutrients to corals and other suspension-feeding invertebrates.
Brightwell Aquatics Reef Snow effectively replicates the concept of marine snow by combining a ‰ÛÏcore substrate‰ of carbonate-bound, non-conservative major, minor, and trace elements (all in aragonite ratios) with marine-derived proteins and fatty acids (all in coral tissue ratios). It does not contain any sugars or their derivatives. Reef Snow delivers both organic and inorganic nutrients to corals and their allies, clams, tube worms, and other suspension-feeding marine invertebrates; it may be of particular benefit to the hobbyist wishing to maintain azooxanthellate soft corals in deep-water biotope aquaria. The collective benefits of providing these nutrients in the same ‰ÛÏpackage‰ are increased growth rates of both soft tissue and skeletal material.
Reef Snow does not require refrigeration, however storage in a cool, shaded area will prolong the shelf-life. Refrigeration will maximize the shelf-life of the product.
Shake product well before using. Turn protein skimmer and other forms of mechanical filtration off prior to adding Reef Snow to aquaria, and allow 10 - 15 minutes after use before resuming operation of filtration. Most zooxanthellate corals extend their tentacles at night, when the majority of coralivorous and zooplanktivorous fishes are asleep and the abundance of zooplankton in the water column passing over and through the reef is at its greatest. Therefore, the most sensible time to feed Reef Snow to corals is after all lights in the aquarium have been off (preferably for at least one- to two-hours) and the room is dark. Using a dim flashlight, illuminate the area immediately upstream of the coral to be fed, then feed as directed below. Slight cloudiness of the aquarium water accompanying dosage of Reef Snow is a result of the inorganic active components entering solution and will dissipate rapidly.
Target Feeding (recommended): Target feeding may be carried out with a lengthy piece of rigid air tubing, plastic syringe, pipette, dropper, or similar device; suck a portion of Reef Snow into the feeding device, then slowly discharge the contents of the device 2 - 4‰ upstream of the target organism(s). Repeat these steps as deemed necessary. Do not place items that have been exposed to aquarium water inside this container without first thoroughly rinsing them (inside and outside) with fresh water; failure to do so will contaminate the product and encourage it to decompose. See ‰Û÷Notes‰۪ below regarding maximum recommended feeding amount.
Broadcast Dispersal: Add up to 2.5 ml (å_-capful) per 50 gallons of water in the entire aquarium system in an area of rapid water movement every other day for the first four weeks of use; thereafter, the dosage may be gradually increased if desired.

Strontium is found in the bones of fish and, more importantly, in aragonite, the mineral secreted by reef-building marine invertebrates such as corals, clams, tube worms, and their respective allies. Overall, strontium accounts for between 0.75 - 1.00% of aragonite‰۪s total mass, and findings suggest that strontium itself induces inorganic precipitation of other ions, creating abiogenic aragonite. Rapid growth rates of corals and other reef-building invertebrates witnessed when strontium is maintained at the natural seawater concentration of approximately 8 ppm suggest this element‰۪s importance in the marine environment. Once the rate of strontium uptake in the aquarium has been determined, the proper dosing rate of this product can be easily calculated.

The use of a mechanical pre-filter to remove particulate organic material from water prior to its interaction with this media will improve efficiency.
Rinse Xport PO4 Cubes in purified water or low-TDS fresh water, then place media into a clean pail and fill with water from the aquarium into which the media is to be placed.
At an initial phosphate concentration of 1 ppm or less, 350 g of Xport PO4 Cubes is capable of extracting ~10.5 g of phosphate; this equates to 1 g of Xport PO4 Cubes per 396 US-gallons (1,500 L) to eliminate 0.02 ppm phosphate. Replace media when phosphate concentration ceases to decrease (if greater than 0 ppm) or begins to increase.
In low-nutrient aquaria, it is not uncommon for several months to pass before the media has become exhausted. If corals or other invertebrates appear to react negatively to the use of the media, it may be an indication that reactive phosphate is being removed too aggressively; decrease amount used by 50% and continue use until phosphate concentration appears to be immeasurable.
The most efficient use of Xport PO4 Cubes will rely upon regular testing for phosphate with an accurate test kit to ensure that the mass of media being employed is suitable for the system requirements. A flow-through rate of 1 - 3x the total aquarium volume per hour is recommended. Do not fluidize; fluidization serves to decrease filtration efficiency and may cause gradual deterioration of the material, potentially resulting in dispersal of harmless, but unattractive, dust throughout the system.
Load Xport-PO4 into filter cartridge as directed by filter manufacturer.
Place Xport PO4 Cubes loosely in an 800µm mesh filter bag and locate in an area of low- to medium-flow.
